The Dudley Zoo in the United Kingdom is home to a group of chimpanzees, one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. With a genetic difference of less than two percent, these intelligent and social creatures offer a unique opportunity to observe and learn about our evolutionary connections.
Chimpanzees at Dudley Zoo
At Dudley Zoo, the chimpanzee group is led by a dominant male who maintains order and influences the activities within the community. The group is a mix of individuals, each with their own unique personalities and behaviors.
Binti the Chimp
Binti is a female chimp who is known for being the quietest and shyest of the group. She is available for adoption, with various adoption packages that offer additional benefits, such as a zoo admission ticket and a personalized message displayed outside her enclosure.
Fanny the Chimp
Fanny is another female chimp at Dudley Zoo, known for being one of the leaders of the gang and a brilliant mother to her daughter Malaika. Like Binti, Fanny is also available for adoption with similar adoption packages.
Adoption Packages
Dudley Zoo offers two adoption packages for their chimps: Gold and Silver. The Gold Adoption package includes a certificate of adoption, an animal factsheet, an animal photo, a subscription to the ZooNooz newsletter, one zoo admission ticket, a greetings card, a presentation folder, a photo frame, an additional zoo admission ticket, and a personalized message displayed outside the adopted animal’s enclosure. The Silver Adoption package includes most of these benefits, excluding the additional zoo admission ticket and personalized message.
Chimpanzee Details
Chimpanzees are endangered, with habitat destruction being the major threat. They are native to Africa, specifically from Guinea to western Uganda and Tanzania. Chimpanzees live in rainforests and wet savannahs and can grow to be approximately 1.7m tall for males and 1.3m tall for females. They weigh between 45-80kg and have a lifespan of 50-60 years. Chimpanzees communicate through a range of calls, facial expressions, and gestures, and they are seven times stronger than humans.
