Central Park Zoo Grizzly Bears: Ambassadors of the Wild

The Central Park Zoo is home to three grizzly bears: Amber, Luna, and Treena. These bears were orphaned as cubs in Montana and were rescued by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in 2013. They were initially housed at the Bronx Zoo before being relocated to the Central Park Zoo in May 2022.

The grizzly bears are housed in the Grizzly Bear & Treena’s Overlook exhibit, which is open year-round. The exhibit features a naturalistic habitat with rocks, dirt, and water features, including a stream and pools. The bears enjoy swimming, wrestling with each other, stretching, and engaging in enrichment activities provided by their keepers, such as foraging for food treats.

Wildlife Conservation and Coexistence

Central Park Zoo Grizzly Bears

The grizzly bears at Central Park Zoo serve as ambassadors for their wild cousins, educating visitors about the importance of coexisting with wildlife. WCS conservationists work to reduce human-bear conflicts by promoting practices such as keeping human food away from bears and guiding land use decisions to minimize rural sprawl.
