The Cincinnati Zoo Crew, also known as the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW), is a leading organization in wildlife conservation efforts. CREW employs a multi-pronged approach that includes research, propagation, in situ protection, education, and public engagement to save targeted plants and animals.
CREW Tours
Visitors to the Cincinnati Zoo can experience the work of the CREW team through guided tours. These tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife, where CREW’s cutting-edge research and conservation efforts take place.

Signature Conservation Projects
CREW’s conservation efforts are focused on several key projects that are internationally recognized for their impact:
Exceptional Plants
CREW’s plant conservation program works to protect and restore rare and endangered plant species, both locally and globally.
Rhinos
CREW is a leader in rhino conservation, with a focus on the critically endangered Sumatran and Javan rhinos.
Imperiled Cats
CREW’s work on imperiled cat species, such as the clouded leopard and the fishing cat, aims to ensure the survival of these threatened felines.
Polar Bears
CREW’s research on polar bears and their Arctic habitats contributes to the understanding and protection of this iconic species.
CREW Ambassadors
CREW Ambassadors play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the science and conservation efforts of CREW and the general public. These dedicated individuals use biofacts, hands-on activities, and captivating stories to engage and inspire Zoo guests at the CREW cart near the Black Rhino exhibit.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Cincinnati Zoo Crew offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for those interested in supporting their conservation efforts:
- Support Services/Reception Desk: Greet visitors, monitor the sign-in sheet, and keep the information table stocked. This position includes cleaning the outside of test tubes, labeling tubes for samples, refilling pipette boxes, and some data entry.
- CREW Ambassadors: Not accepting applications at this time.
- Habitat Ambassadors: Encourage wonder and facilitate inspired conversations for a brighter future for wildlife and people. Recruitment is closed for the 2024 season, but applications will be accepted starting November 1st.
- Volunteer Diver: Currently accepting applications. Requirements include a certified open water diver certification, 1-year experience minimum, 25 dive minimum, current documentation, CPR/First Aid/AED certification, COVID vaccination and booster, TB test with a negative result within the last year, medical history form, and doctor’s clearance.
Behind-the-Scenes Experiences
In addition to the CREW tours, the Cincinnati Zoo offers two other behind-the-scenes experiences:
- Animal Hospital Tour: Learn about veterinary care and see cutting-edge diagnostic tools. Tickets are $15 per person and available from April to October.
- Go-Green Sustainability Tour: Learn about green initiatives and sustainability efforts. Tickets are $10 per person and available from April to October.
