London Zoo is home to a diverse collection of reptiles and amphibians, which are some of the most threatened groups on the planet. With cutting-edge scientific research and breeding programs, ZSL is working to save several species, including those listed as Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE).
Highlights of London Zoo Reptiles and Amphibians
Philippine Crocodile
The Philippine crocodile is an EDGE species, highlighting its unique evolutionary history and the urgent need for conservation action. It is currently housed in the Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians exhibit, which opened in 2024.
Mountain Chicken Frog
This critically endangered species is part of the mountain chicken recovery programme, a partnership set up with other zoos and organisations. London Zoo has been working to save the species for over a decade, and in 2019, 27 mountain chicken frogs bred at ZSL London Zoo were sent to the island of Montserrat as part of a reintroduction effort.
Mangshan Viper
One of the world’s rarest venomous snakes, London Zoo is the only Zoo in the UK to look after Mangshan vipers.
Big-headed Turtles and Sardinian Salamanders
Both species are considered highly threatened by conservationists, with the salamander particularly at risk from chytrid fungi, while the big-headed turtle has been poached for meat and for the exotic pet trade.
